The Different Types of Private Investigator Jobs
When it comes to private investigation jobs, there are different kinds you can get. All of these jobs do require proper credentials. Before you are able to even apply for private investigator jobs, you will need to attend a specialty school or college and take courses that permit you to practice as a private investigator in your state. From there you can explore your various career options. The need for private investigators is growing yet the job market is competitive.
Some private investigators are their own boss. They are self-employed, or own their own business. This represents about 30 percent of the PI population, as stated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The other 70 percent are employed with agencies, who often have many investigators who may be sent on assignments based on their experience. Also investigators may be paired or teamed by such agencies depending on the job at hand. There are a wide variety of tasks that are carried out by private investigative professionals.
There are parts of being an investigative professional that can be boring for some. Much of the work involves poring over specialized databases and papers hunting for information. This desk work is well suited to some who enjoy analyzing information and don't want to put themselves at risk. The other aspect of being a PI is stakeouts, following marks and even apprehending suspects for police if you are also a bounty hunter, which happens to be a career that is very close to private investigator (and some people choose to do both.) Your duties may also depend on a certain area you specialize in, such as surveillance or data analysis.
Many private investigator jobs are filled by professionals who have experience in a field that is similar. They may have worked as police officers, security specialists or even for the government. Regardless of past experience, it is necessary that all investigators get the right education. How long it will take depends on your state requirements and the school you choose, although two years is about the average. If you can get an internship as part of your schooling you should, because this can give you valuable on the job training and get your foot in the door with top agencies. Some interns graduate from private investigation school and go on to get jobs with the companies they interned with.
